British voters rejected Prime Minister Theresa May‘s vision of a hard Brexit, potentially paving the way for a less abrasive breakup with the European Union.

Seven weeks after she called a snap election to strengthen her hand for the looming divorce talks, May‘s premiership was on the line Friday with her Conservative Party preparing to govern without a parliamentary majority.

That suggests the U.K. will be unable to engage with the EU in two weeks‘ time as scheduled because May or her successor will first need to build a new government and perhaps even a fresh negotiating strategy. The BBC reported May will seek to stay on.
