Slovakia‘s ruling coalition teetered on the brink of collapse after a political crisis triggered by a journalist‘s murder sowed discord among its parties and ignited the biggest protests since the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Facing calls from the president and demonstrators to make way for early elections two years before his term expires, Prime Minister Robert Fico will hear later on Monday whether enough lawmakers from his coalition partners will stand by him and hold on to their slim majority in parliament.

„It‘s up to us to decide whether we will succumb to pessimism or whether we will further work on this story together,“ Fico said in a statement in an unusually conciliatory appeal to his partners. „The first decision about continuing this story is today in the hands of the government coalition. I believe that we‘ll all be responsible.“
