Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said any financial hit from a European Union probe would be “immaterial” to the group, as it responded to speculation it may be forced to repay millions of euros in illegal tax breaks.

Fiat and coffee giant Starbucks Corp. are set to be first in the firing line as the European Commission issues a series of decisions over tax breaks for global companies, including Apple Inc. and Amazon.com.Inc., people familiar with the cases have said.

A Fiat Luxembourg unit “did not receive any state aid” and “any finding in this matter would be immaterial to the FCA Group’s reported results,” the company said in an e-mailed statement on Tuesday.
